The Elginfield Observatory owned and operated by the University of Western Ontario is located north of London Ontario and will be closing at the end of 2010 due to a loss in interest. With cost to maintain the facility rising and retirement of the observatory technician, Professor David Gray of the Physics & Astronomy Department at UWO feels there is no need to keep the telescope going with research migrating elsewhere and enough data to study for decades. The observatory featured a 1.2 m Ritchey–Chrétien telescope built by Boller and Chivens which is used for spectroscopy and photometry. The Observatory opened in 1969.
